Book Harvest is a Durham-based nonprofit that provides books to children in need. The Book Harvest team collects new and gently used children’s books and shares them with local low-income children to keep for their very own. By building home libraries, children are empowered to arrive at kindergarten ready to learn, combat summer learning loss once they are in school, and self-identify as readers. Since 2011, Book Harvest has placed more than 320,000 books in the hands and homes of Triangle children in need.

FACTS ABOUT CHILDHOOD LITERACY

15 Minutes
of reading with a parent every day exposes a child to a million words a year.
2/3
of children living in poverty do not have books in their homes.
88%
of first-graders who are below grade level in reading will continue to read below grade level in fourth grade.
80%
of brain development happens in the first three years of life.
25 Books
The number of books at home that propel a child two years further in education than a child from a home without books.
3 Years
The gap in reading achievement that accrues over the summer by fifth grade between economically disadvantaged students and their higher-income peers.
Books in the home are the single biggest indicator of academic success — surpassing all other factors.
